What We're Reading | Vol. 1

Reading books is an activity that both of my boys love to do. We read stacks of picture books throughout the day and part of our simple bedtime routine is reading three books aloud before lights out. I’m always on the lookout for new books to add to our rotation and thought it would be fun to create a collection here of the books we’ve read each week in case you are looking for new books too!
The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss
A fun classic that is focused on “the many, many feet you meet.”  I love this book because it also gives us an opportunity to work on lefts and rights as well as adjectives. It’s a quick read and frequently in the rotation.

That’s Not My Truck by F. Watt & R. Wells
Part of the “That’s Not My…” series from Usborne books, That’s Not My Truck is a sensory book with lots of different textures. The story goes through different trucks and describes why that truck is not “my truck.” I love this book because of the fun textures, adjectives and simple pictures.

Barnyard Dance! by Sandra Boynton
One of my husband’s favorite books to read aloud to the kids, Barnyard Dance! reminds me of a country line dance with classic farm animals. We like to have Henry point out all of the animals for us on each page. You can also use this book to do the dance and get the wiggles out!

Busy Trucks on the Go by Eric Ode
This books is great for kids who love trucks. In a fun rhyme, you will learn about all kinds of different trucks. From cement trucks to mail trucks and everything in between, this book has most (if not all) of the trucks you see every time you’re in the car. Each page shows real life scenarios of a little boy and his dad seeing the trucks in their “native environment.”

One of the many adorable books in the “If I Were A…” series from Jellycat, this is another great sensory book. The pictures and words are simple and each page has something fun to touch, whether it be scratchy duck feet or a fluffy duck bottom. Many of the books in this series have a Jellycat stuffed animal that looks exactly like the illustrations (it makes a great baby gift!).

Where’s Nessie? by Lis Thorburn & Garry Thorburn
An adorable lift-the-flap book about the Loch Ness Monster (Nessie) that my sister brought back from Scotland for the boys. Henry loves opening the flaps in search for the elusive Loch Ness Monster.

A fun ABC adventure with all things steampunk. Follow along as a pair of mice go from “A is for Anvil” through the alphabet using things like “H is for Hammer” and “N is for Nail” to build “Z is for Zeppelin.” The illustrations are fun and it is a great book for building vocabulary. You won’t find “E is for elephant” in this book!

Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney
Llama Llama doesn't want to go to bed and keeps calling for his Mama (sound familiar?).  This book has a fun rhyming rhythm that has both Henry and I chuckling by the end.

Hug by Jez Alborough
This is a book that uses only three words, which makes it great for using your imagination to tell the story.  A baby monkey is looking

A classic Dr. Seuss book with fun to say words and tongue twisters.  The rhythm of the book is fun and easy and is super entertaining for kids.
